THE ACTOR SPACE,JUNIOR:
An environment for 7 – 17 year olds to learn and express through the medium of acting for film and television. To develop their skills for life by developing their innate abilities to listen, respond and process their own emotions through those of their Character. To become confident with public speaking and their own poise and demeaner. To interact in a myriad of social situations in a guided environment. To tell stories in the first person with voice and body. And if so desired to pursue it, to learn and master age appropriate materials and information to actually work within the film and television industry.
Led by Joe Palese and Debra Lynn Hull The Actor Space, Junior curriculum is designed for the training and development of the young actor. Whether the goal is working in the entertainment industry, developing self-confidence, or just having fun. The Actor Space, Jr. Is the perfect place for the young actor to be. Using primarily the techniques developed by Sanford Meisner, and such luminaries as Milton Katselas and Martin Landau the young actors are led through work and play to discover and develop the skills and technique to successfully, artfully and truthfully become the characters whose stories we want to watch.
FOR THE ACTOR: you will learn the techniques to access your own experiences and how to successfully layer them into characters to truthfully express their stories to the audience. With exercises that yoga up your improv brain you will be amazed at how flexible your thinking becomes so your imagination expands to see the other points of view. Using the curriculums that follow, you will be guided to learn and develop a process through which you fully develop characters whose stories you could actually be cast in. We will use material both original and industry shot that allow you to master the styles of filming that are the current industry standards. You will learn set protocols, expectations of Directors, Casting Directors, Agents and Managers. You will learn how to break down a script and prepare it for a Hot Scene (you never want to give an audition a Cold Read). You will practice all that you learn and at the end of the session, those who wish to, will Showcase for friends, family, and industry professionals.
FOR THE PARENT: Self-confidence and comfort in public are two of the most challenging aspects of childhood (and yes for you teens we are still a bit protective). Traditionally the greatest benefit of a Drama program in the public schools was to give our young people an arena to develop those two skills. But the combination of educational budget cuts and age-inappropriate material (seriously, very few 13 year-olds can even understand the works of Tennessee Williams – thankfully) have stripped many programs down to a process of memorization and recitation. We at The Actor Space, Junior. feel that the better value lies in the material being life-like. That is not to say it will milk toast the ability of the individual will determine the depth of the piece. But the situations will be age appropriate. We have two very selfish reasons for this. #1 we want our parents and students to feel confident and comfortable with the environment we are creating and #2 for those of our students that want to pursue the industry we want to train them in material that they could actually be cast in.
FOR THE SANITY OF THE FAMILY: The annual curriculum will be in four quarters following the flow of the traditional school year and the film and television industry as best we can. Actors may sign for one or more quarters. This will allow for other extra curricular events such as sports without the Actor feeling as though they are getting left behind. While this first section of training is a bit truncated (and discounted) the quarters will be as follows
WINTER SESSION: Preparing for Pilots
8 weeks of training and practice focusing on the material and idiosyncrasies of pilots and pilot presentations The 9th week will be a showcase for family, friends and industry. Then three weeks off (somewhat corresponding with Spring break)
SPTING SESSION: Crazy Commercials
8 weeks to get into this brain. Commercials are unique to this industry as they are a blend between the entertainment and marketing industries there is much you need to know. You will practice not only the performance techniques, but the audition and callback techniques as well. The 9th week showcase. Then three weeks off (hitting right around June)
SUMMER SESSION: Fantastic Filming
8 weeks of film scenes, as they traditionally shoot over the summer months with the etiquettes and protocols that are unique to a film project. We will also teach the rules and regulations as those under 18 have very specific guidelines. Showcase in week 9 and a three week break. (right around Labor Day and the return to traditional school)
FALL SESSION: Enter the Episodics
What most of us have come to know as television the episodic season has it's own personality. Your 8 week prep will teach you the quirks and help you train for the fun and somewhat hectic element of this phase of the industry. Again with the showcase on week 9 and the a three week break (right around the Holidays) |
